A Japanese journey of faith 24th August 2006

A woman who is the driving force behind an ambitious multi-faith event has travelled to the other side of the world to rally support for the venture. Vivienne Woolston, from north Hampshire, was this week attending the Wold Assembly on Religions for Peace in Japan to meet with religious leaders and to try to secure speakers and donors for the event due to be held in London next year.

Ms Woolston is the founder and director of Thursday's Child - A Celebration of Faith, which is scheduled to take place on July, 7, 2007, at the Excel exhibition centre, London. She is one of only 19 people from the UK attending the Eighth World Assemble in Kyoto and is hoping the experience will prove valuable.

She said: "I am hoping to be able to meet with religious leaders and invite them to speak at the collaboration of faiths. It is a good opportunity to share my vision of the project that I am working on."

Ms Woolston will spend eight days in Kyoto, as a self-sponsored delegate, attending conferences and meeting with 400 others from across the world. Ms Woolston, who has worked with religious groups in the community for many years, decided to organise Thursday's Child after the London bombings on July 7, 2005.

Next year's event is due to take place on the weekend of July 7 and 8, and will see individuals and organisations representing all faiths taking part in a "celebration of faith" in a non-religious environment. It is hoped that 30,000 people will attend the event, which is being organised in association with Religions for Peace and the United Religions Initiative.

Professor June Boyce-Tillman 22nd February 2006

We are delighted to announce that Professor June Boyce-Tillman, is working on a "Thursday's Child - a celebration of faith" musical and dramatic composition:

Her plan is to create a framework for a musical/dramatic piece based on bringing the representatives of the great faiths together. The plans at present are to make the piece with spaces in it where the faiths can create a musical and/or dramatic piece on the theme of reconciliation. There will be sections sung by all, most probably including the peace prayer:

Lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth
Lead us from despair to hope from fear to trust,
Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace
Let peace fill our hearts, fill our world, fill our universe
Peace, peace, peace.

June envisages a singing procession with candles and adults and children co-operating together and filling a great space with the sounds of reconciliation and peace. The audience will be invited to join in the singing too and thus encircled by it.

More about June Boyce-Tillman:
June Boyce-Tillman read Music at Hugh's College, Oxford and has taught in primary and secondary schools in London. She also completed a PhD at the Institute of Education entitled 'Towards a model of the musical development of children'. She has a particular interest in Music and Theology including Religious Education. She has done pioneering work in Interfaith dialogue in South London and was Research Officer for an EEC Intercultural project based at the Institute of Education. She has written much and spoken on women's role in church music and music in general. She is a composer, and her works have been performed in various cathedrals in the UK and in other countries including Germany, Zimbabwe and the US. Her research is into the medieval abbess, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) and many of her pieces incorporate her ideas. She is a singer specialising in religious material. She is now Professor of Applied Music at The University of Winchester.
